The Smithereens inducted into the Star-Ledger NJ rock & pop hall of fame

Updated: Feb 5, 2019

The Star-Ledger has created a virtual New Jersey Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame paying tribute to the greatest musicians of the Garden State. Among the 12 inductees are Southside Johnny, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, The Shirelles, Bon Jovi, Four Seasons, Whitney Houston, P-Funk, Kool & the Gang, The Fugees, Dionne Warwick, and, you guessed it, The Smithereens!

“The four musicians, who grew up in Carteret and Scotch Plains, struggled for five years before landing a contract with then-independent Enigma Records. “Especially for You,” the group’s first full-length album, established a sound from which the band would hardly ever deviate: a little fatalistic ’60s storytelling rock, a little Costello belligerence, some Lennon mystery and a lot of Marshall-amplified six-string crunch.”
